Healthcare should be a human right for everyone, but medical debt is the biggest cause of bankruptcy in the United States. Hillsborough County alone has $244 million in medical debt. This problem doesn’t exist in countries with universal healthcare. While we continue fighting for single-payer, universal healthcare in the U.S., we must take immediate action to help those burdened by medical debt.
Working in collaboration with Undue Medical Debt, Tampa DSA plans to purchase and cancel $1 million of medical debt, which would only take $10,000! For every dollar we raise, we can cancel $100 of debt.
